Before the game United had an outside chance of pipping Portsmouth for the first division championship. That chance however was shattered at Maine Road when they were mastered and defeated by a Sunderland team playing their best football of the season. Every man in the side enhanced his reputation and Broadis introduced as leader added menace and thrust to the attack.
