The draw for round 4 gives Sunderland a home tie

against Southampton

The FA rules at the time said that if the strips clashed then both teams had to play in their away strip. The problem then was that both away strips clashed so both teams were told to borrow strips. As a result Sunderland borrowed strips from our close friends up the road, consequently we played a home game wearing black & white stripes !!

Despite this picture & article, the FA told both teams to

change their strips

Sunderland players in the pic are Mapson, Walsh (no5) and Arthur. The saints player is Ted Bates who later became their manaager.

For historian's, notice the middle level of the main stand is standing, the attendance for the game was a canny 61,314.

Sunderland won the game 2-0 and were drawn at home to Norwich in the next round
