Season 1948 -49

At the end of the season, Sunderland agreed to play

against Glasgow Celtic in a testimonial game for

Sam Doak,  Bangor's goalkeeper, at Grosvenor Park on 17 May.

Both teams at Belfast Civic Hall, Arthur sitting front row centre. Interesting to see how many you can spot with cigarette's

in their hand !!

A crowd of 14,000 see a game that according to reports, was a bit fiesty rather than an "end of season friendly" with Sunderland winning 6 - 2

As a family footnote to this game, Arthur's sister in law, Pat Wilson went to the game even though she was pregnant & due any time. Asked how she got in through the turnstile, she replied, " just breathed in & lifted it (the bump) up !! Two days later she gave birth to her son, our cousin , William (Billy) Wilson.

Nice one Auntie Pat !!
